Atkins is known as one of the first low carbohydrate diet that can give the results that the dieter craves in as little as six weeks. This three phase diet plan includes low carbohydrate foods with foods that are high in protein to create a svelte figure that can come when carbohydrates are removed from the body. The diet was created by Dr. Robert Atkins decades ago and is still being used for those seeking a quick alternative to eating plans that can reduce the weight slowly. In the first phase of the Atkins diet, the dieter can lose up to fifteen pounds of weight and countless inches from the body.
There are four phrases to the Atkins diet:
Phase one – Induction phase of the diet
Phase two – Ongoing weight loss phase of the diet
Phase three – Pre maintenance phase of the diet
Phase four – Lifetime maintenance phase of the diet
Each phases use specific techniques to create the highest level of weight loss for the dieter. The dieter can start in any phase of the diet from one to three, depending on how much weight the dieter wishes to lose throughout the process of the Atkins diet plan. Each phase of the diet uses different choices and different foods and exercises that will encompass the highest level of weight loss possible.
Phase one of the Atkins diet plan is referred to as the induction phase and is the time when the dieter will adhere to strict weight loss regimen – with a strict eating plan. This eating plan drastically reduces the carbohydrates which are ingested and is a way to jump start the metabolism and enables the dieter to lose weight quickly. This phase can last up to three weeks and helps to curb the cravings that come with other diet plans. Through the first phase of the program there is a limit placed on the amount of carbohydrates that are eaten throughout the day.
Phase two of the diet begins to incorporate the foods that were removed from the diet in phase one. Phase two allows the dieter to continue with the weight loss program and sees success as the dieter gets closer to reaching the weight loss goals.
Pre maintenance is the third phase of the Atkins weight loss program and enables the dieter to begin their regimen of healthy eating habits that will help to maintain the diet and the weight loss throughout the program. This is followed by phase four of the diet, which includes the lifetime maintenance program which enables the dieter with the choices to make the weight loss stick – throughout the lifetime of the dieter.
The Atkins weight loss program has received some criticism because of the high fat content which is present in many of the foods. This high fat content has been linked to heart disease and other malfunctions and can create a problem with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
