The Hay diet 101

Almost one hundred years ago the Hay method of weight loss was created that uses specific food combination techniques to allow the dieter to attain their weight loss goals and lose up to three pounds per week. The food combination diet relies on the fact that certain foods when combined can lead to weight gain and other foods that are combined can lead to weight loss.

Foods that are incompatible with one another and combined can lead to digestive problems and cause bloating and weight gain in the person who is trying to lose weight. Finding the right food combinations can help the dieter achieve weight loss. In order to maintain the best health and condition of the body it is important to avoid making the wrong food combinations.

Acid forming foods that create the acid through the process of digestion include: meat, fish, eggs and cheese. Alkali forming foods include fruits and vegetables – yes, even lemons and other types of fruits that are considered to be acidic. The end process of these fruits and vegetables will be Alkali and should be avoided while consuming proteins.

The Hay diet relies on the research that there are two ways the body will digest food – the body will either produce alkali to digest the food, or the body will rely on the use of acids to reduce foods. Each type of food is digested differently therefore it is important to avoid mixing these foods to enable a healthy digestive system.

How long should you wait before consuming the foods that will react differently in the digestive system? According to the Hays diet, it is important to avoid these products in the same meal and even through the snacks that are eaten during the day. Mixing these foods can only lead to trouble within the digestive system.

The rules to the Hay diet are similar to those rules that are present in the rules of the food combination diet, since essentially – these diets are similar in nature. These rules are as follows:

• Proteins, starches and types of fats should not be consumed in large portions
• Vegetables and fruits, as well as their juices should make up the major portion of the diet to create a healthy digestive system
• It is important to avoid drinking excess amounts of milk, as milk does not combine well with other types of foods
• Melons should also be avoided with other types of food, as melons do not combine well with other types of food
• Wait at least four hours between meals where starch and proteins are going to be consumed. Four hours apart will allow the food to complete the digestions system
• All foods that have been refined or processed should be removed from the diet
• Whole grains should be the only grains which are consumed when following the Hay diet plan


Following these rules in combination with the technique which are created within the Hay diet can lead to digestive harmony.
