There are many reasons that people choose to follow the macrobiotic diet. Many people choose to follow the diet as it is a way of living in harmony with the earth; others see the diet as living in harmony y within the systems of the body. Others believe that the simplicity of the diet can lead to weight loss when the diet has been followed for a long period of time. Regardless of the reasons that one chooses to follow the macrobiotic diet.

As with any weight loss plan, it is important to include adequate amounts of exercise. There are many types of exercise that should be completed when you have made the decision to follow the macrobiotic diet. Cardiovascular and high intensity exercises should be completed to get the heart rate up and maintain good health and muscle building and toning exercises should be completed as they can help to maintain and even increase the speed of the metabolism.

What types of foods are consumed on the macrobiotic diet? At least fifty percent of the meal is made up of whole grains when one decides to follow the macrobiotic diet. Almost every meal that one takes during the macrobiotic diet will contain some sort of soup. Soup has been known as a wonderful way to cleanse the system and ensure that the body is well prepared to take the meal. Along with the soup and whole grains, thirty percent of the diet is made up of vegetables or fruits. These types of fruits and vegetables that make up the diet are considered to be good carbohydrates and can provide the body with high levels of energy. Beans and other sources of fiber make up ten percent of the diet and should be consumed with every meal. Beans and legumes are some of the foods that contribute to digestive health. A small amount of protein can be consumed throughout the meal. This protein in small portions can be helpful to the body – but should not be overeaten.

Following the macrobiotic diet is more of a lifestyle and health decision, rather than a decision for short term weight loss. The macrobiotic diet requires a high level of discipline and the strength to want to increase the life span and health. It has very few restrictions and even allows the dieter to enjoy desserts in moderation. Rather than limiting food intake, the macrobiotic teaches us to make the right choices when it comes to food – to live a longer and healthier life.
