Losing Weight with the Pritikin diet

The Pritikin diet uses a healthy, vegetarian-like approach to developing a meal plan that can assist in weight loss and help the dieter to approach a healthy lifestyle. The diet has been known to improve the health of the cardiovascular system and requires the dieter to live on a diet that consists of very low fat foods, whole grains and fruits and vegetable combinations.

The Pritikin diet was first created to improve the health of the cardiovascular system. Over time, it was discovered that the patients were also losing weight through the diet process.

What types of foods are eliminated from the diet of the dieter that is following the Pritikin diet? Processed foods, pasta, white flours and breads are all eliminated from the diet in combination with proteins from animal fats and eggs. These foods are often high in calories and contain very little amounts of healthy fats.

Healthy fats within the diet are necessary to allow the body to reach the maximum health potential. Which foods contain high levels of healthy fats? Servings of fish and using olive oil within the diet are great ways to up the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids within the diet and actually increase the health of the heart, in comparison with trans and saturated fats which can contribute to heart disease.

The food choices that you make contribute largely to the health of the body. All calories are not equal and this should be taken into account when making food choices. If a person is to consume a pound of broccoli, it is important to realize that this is not equal to that person consuming a pound of chocolate cheesecake. There is a difference of thousands of calories between these food choices, which can lead to multiple pounds of weight loss if not offset by physical activity.

Depending on the caloric density of the foods that the dieter consumes, meaning how long the dieter will feel full and help the dieter to eat less. Foods that are high in fiber can assist in weight loss and help the dieter to feel fuller longer. These foods should be consumed through the diet to ensure that the dieter can achieve the weight loss goals. Foods that are high in fiber and have a natural whole grain carbohydrate density can lead to ongoing weight loss.

There are many foods that are preferred during the weight loss process to ensure that weight loss is seen for those following the Pritikin diet, these foods are; brown rice, onions, potatoes, squash, beans, apples, pears, strawberries and bananas. When foods are eaten that is low in caloric density, such as white pasta – the diet recommends that these high caloric density foods be combined with fruits and vegetables to reduce the caloric intake of these foods. This can assist in the weight loss process and help to achieve the weight loss goals that have been set – through the use of a balanced diet that can help weight loss become a goal.
